Our vision is to re-order the food system into a self-sustaining decentralized one where human communities are empowered to control and influence their food and nutrition needs thereby guaranteeing their wellbeing.
We believe in the power and wise application of exponential technologies to infuse sustainability and equitable resource distribution while transforming the food system to fulfil the nutritional needs of billions of households and families around the world.
The disorder and imbalance in the food system are of grave concern, for instance, Africa produces 146 million out of the 268 million tonnes of cassava in the world – or 55 per cent, 5.4 million of the 5.6 million tonnes of cowpeas (Black-eyed pea), 9.62 million of the 28 million tonnes of millet and 29 million of the 69 million tonnes of sorghum globally, sadly Africa does not process its own food, the produce is cultivated processed externally and resold at a premium to vulnerable communities.
Africa accounts for 75 per cent of the world’s cocoa production, but the continent only receives 2 per cent of the $100 billion annual revenues from chocolates globally because it only exports raw cocoa beans.
In the United States and around the world 3 billion tonnes of food is wasted annually largely due to unsustainable practices in the agri-food distribution value chain.
Our goal is to identify these challenges and apply science, innovation, and design thinking to transform our food system positively for the next generation.
In light of the above, there is an urgent need to decentralize the food systems and redistribute the power to feed and control nutrition.

Chowberry was officially incorporated in 2016, inspired by our founders childhood experience with hunger and first-hand view of its link with food waste.
Chowberry started as an app that reduces food waste and improves food access to families facing hunger by allowing grocers trace and monitor products approaching the end of shelf-life and initiate steep pricing discounts on them as their sell-by dates approach. Partner food relief agencies then procure the discounted food items for their feeding programs in poor communities. The organization has grown to impact hundreds of thousands of lives in Africa beginning with Nigeria, and now has an official presence in the United States,

The app won the Young Innovators Award 2013 by the United Nations agency for ICT – the International Telecoms Union (ITU) and received an initial prize funding for $5,000 which acted as seed funding that jumpstarted Chowberry into what it has become over the years.
Chowberry gained critical acclaim and recognition after Time Magazine featured a piece in the 2017 edition of the Next Generation Leader series. As a social enterprise, we have successfully distributed over 1.6 Million meals across Nigeria in underserved and indigent communities.
We have helped and collaborated with global food brands like Barilla Group and International organizations like the World Bank, European Union, MIT Solve, Mohammed Bin Rasheed Initiative for prosperity amongst others to shape the future of our food systems to be more sustainable and regenerative.
As an organization, our focus is targeted at four key thematic interventions in Food-Tech, Health and Nutrition, Research and Development for the Food System and Food Waste reduction.
Our expertise in food systems innovation, use of technology for development and Social Entrepreneurship has created numerous opportunities for advisory, collaboration and knowledge sharing for global institutions and top food brands which include Barilla Group, Food Tank, Rolex SA, and British Council.

Chowberry Inc CEO and Founder Oscar Ekponimos work began in 2013 drawing from his childhood experience with hunger and deep Christian values of improving lives while fulfilling Godly purpose and plans. These experiences inspired him to create Chowberry and 7 years later Chowberry has facilitated the distribution of over 1.6 Million meals and prevented around 30,000 tons of food from being wasted in Africa. Ekponimo has been recognized for his work with Chowberry as a Time Magazine Next Generation Leader (2017), was named Young Pioneer by Harvard Medical School through the World Frontiers Forum,   Rolex Awards for Enterprise Laureate (2016), a United Nations ITU Young Innovator (2013), featured on the Bill Gates supported Quartz Top 30 African Innovator, and a BBC Top 10 Innovation (2018) amongst other international recognition.
Named in Time Magazine’s list of 10 Next Generation Leaders. Oscar is the Founder of Chowberry Inc, a technology-driven social business that helps retailers cut food waste and improves food accessibility and affordability for disadvantaged households facing food poverty. He is a recipient of the prestigious Rolex Award forEnterprise in Applied Technology for his work on Chowberry which today has impacted over 52,000 disadvantaged families facing hunger. He founded Africa’s first trans-disciplinary design lab at the intersection of Arts and Technology called Gallery of Code, which works to develop innovative solutions that affect society in partnership with Ars Electronica Futurelab. He is a member of the Advisory Board – Digital Communities to Ars Electronica GmBH Austria and served as the One Young World Ambassador from Nigeria. A prolific speaker, he shares insight on the innovative use of technology for social change at forums such as the UN Social Good Summit in New York, Yale University African Development Conference in Connecticut USA and most recently in Harvard Business School at the World Frontiers Forum. Oscar is a Young Convergence Pioneer working on the Foods That Matter project to improve micro-nutrient access to 10 million individuals in the developing world out of the World Frontiers Forum – a consortium of leading scientists from Harvard University and MIT.
